Numerous people have been reported killed in a shooting near Columbus, Ohio.
According to local media, at least five people were found dead following a shooting Monday in West Jefferson, Ohio, a suburb of the state’s capital and largest city, Columbus.
Two television stations in Columbus reported that at least three people were found shot to death inside a building, with additional victims found dead outside at the same location, though the exact number of casualties was not immediately confirmed.
Both television stations, WSYX and WCMH, attributed their information to West Jefferson Police Chief Chris Floyd. However, Floyd could not be reached immediately, and a dispatcher for West Jefferson said she had no information.
Floyd added that the shooting occurred on a dead-end street, leading him to believe the victims were targeted, according to WSYX.
According to WCMH, the crime scene was a residence in West Jefferson, a town of approximately 4,000 residents located approximately 15 miles west of Columbus.
According to WSYX, police were alerted to the shooting by a passerby who dialed the emergency number 911. According to the station, officers secured the scene and began searching for a suspect and evidence.
According to reports, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Madison County Sheriff’s Office aided West Jefferson police in their investigation.
