Former presidential candidate Julian Castro endorses Maya Wiley
Maya Wiley, the Democratic mayoral candidate in New York City, received an endorsement from former presidential candidate Julian Castro on Saturday, less than three weeks before the Democratic primary.
“Maya has demonstrated that she is the candidate with the experience and vision necessary to address New York’s most pressing challenges,” Castro said in a statement.
“I’m honored to join an increasing number of local leaders and progressive champions who believe Maya is the best candidate for mayor,” he continued.
The progressive candidate expressed her appreciation for Castro’s endorsement via Twitter.
“As a former mayor, he understands that if every family is to prosper, we must prioritize supporting working families and small businesses, increasing housing affordability, and transforming policing. Let us proceed!” Wiley stated.
Castro, a former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development and Mayor of San Antonio in the United States, ran for President in the 2020 election.
The sole Latino candidate quickly withdrawn from the race after failing to gain traction in the polls and differentiate himself in a crowded Democratic field.

Castro later endorsed Sen. Elizabeth Warren and then endorsed Joe Biden after he won the Democratic nomination.
As the June 22 primary approaches, all of the mayoral candidates have been scrambling for endorsements.
According to recent polls, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, businessman Andrew Yang, and former city Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn Garcia are the front-runners.
