In the latest US shooting, a man kills two women in Iowa and then himself.
The women were shot and killed outside of a church in Ames right after Joe Biden told Congress that assault weapons should be banned.
Police say a man shot and killed two women in the parking lot of a church in Iowa and then turned the gun on himself. This is the latest in a string of shootings that have shaken the United States in recent weeks.
The shooting in Iowa happened on Thursday, not long after Vice President Joe Biden gave a major speech about gun violence in response to recent mass shootings in Buffalo, New York, Uvalde, Texas, and Tulsa, Oklahoma.
In another shooting on Thursday, two people who were at a funeral in Racine, Wisconsin were hurt.
The shooting in Iowa happened outside of Cornerstone Church, a fundamentalist Christian church east of the city of Ames and about 60 km (37 miles) north of Des Moines, while a church program was going on inside, said Nicholas Lennie, chief deputy of the Story county sheriff’s office.
Lennie said that when deputies got to the scene, they found all three people dead. He also said that he couldn’t tell who they were or what their relationship may have been.
Lennie said, “It looks like this was done by one person acting alone.”
Moments earlier, Biden had asked Congress to take action to stop mass shootings by banning assault weapons, expanding background checks, and taking other gun control measures.
The president said, “Enough, enough!”
In the past few weeks, mass shootings have shocked the United States. Ten Black people were killed in upstate New York, 19 children and two teachers were killed in Texas, and two doctors, a receptionist, and a patient were killed in Oklahoma.
On Thursday, multiple gunshots were fired into a crowd of people at a graveside funeral in Racine, Wisconsin. Two people were hurt, according to Racine police Sgt. Kristi Wilcox.
Wilcox said that one victim was treated at a local hospital and sent home, while the other was flown to a hospital in Milwaukee because his injuries seemed to be worse. No suspect was brought in for questioning.
