60 people are arrested in Minnesota during a nearly 1,000-strong rally against the killing of Daunte Wright.
At least 60 demonstrators were arrested in Minnesota on Tuesday, as the ex-cop who shot and killed Daunte Wright fled her heavily guarded home after her address was leaked online.
State Patrol Chief Matt Langer said early Wednesday that “up to” 60 people were arrested for rioting and other offenses during the most recent night of devastation in Brooklyn Center. More than 50 people were apprehended Monday.
Mayor Mike Elliott of Brooklyn Center blamed “outside forces” for plotting to “infiltrate peaceful demonstrators and cause mayhem,” adding that “Daunte Wright’s death will not be abused.”
Additionally, several demonstrators gathered outside the home of Kimberly Potter, a 26-year police veteran who resigned Tuesday after shooting Wright after apparently mistaking her pistol for her Taser, according to the Daily Mail.
According to the Independent, the 48-year-old ex-cop and married mother of two had already fled the home after learning her address had been leaked on social media by activists.
However, those who arrived at the massive new-build in Champlin, a town located only a few miles from Brooklyn Center, were met by concrete barriers and metal fencing that were erected Tuesday, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Inside the walls, police officers also guarded Potter’s home, where prosecutors believe he could face charges as soon as Wednesday in connection with the fatal arrest.
Tuesday night’s clashes occurred when an estimated 800 to 1,000 demonstrators assembled outside the Brooklyn Center Police Department headquarters, with many rattling a fence erected hours after Wright’s death on Sunday, according to the Star Tribune.
“Unfortunately, once again, several people came out and hurled bricks and other objects at law enforcement,” said Booker Hodges, assistant commissioner for the state Department of Public Safety. “Such behavior would not be tolerated.”
According to the newspaper, some National Guard members were deployed on the roof, while others fired riot gas, bullets, and flash-bangs as they advanced through the crowd.
According to the newspaper, a local resident stuck her head out her window and screamed that tear gas was wafting into her house, which contained children.
Fox 9 video also captured a massive fire raging in the street. In contrast to the previous two nights, however, there were no accounts of widespread looting.
According to a neighbor of Potter’s, the situation has placed the neighborhood on edge.
“We’re anxious, we’re stressed. According to what I’ve heard, some of the neighbors have left,” she said, adding that many people feel for the cop. “It was an appalling situation. Additionally, we feel for Mr. Wright’s family.”
