In a shooting at NHK factory outside Frankfort, a grandmother and granddaughter were slain.
The Clinton County Sheriff’s Office reported that a grandmother and her granddaughter were shot and killed Wednesday afternoon at the new NHK Seating of America plant west of Frankfort.
Pamela Sled, 62, and Promise Mays, 21, both of Rossville, drove to the plant together and were about to begin their shifts when a coworker opened fire. Gary Ferrell II, a 26-year-old Frankfort resident, then departed the scene in a blue Ford Focus.
Ferrell reached speeds of 90-100 mph before colliding with a work zone in Frankfort, Clinton County Sheriff Rich Kelly said during a news conference Wednesday night. Following the crash, he was apprehended without incident.
Ferrell had no criminal past that the police were aware of. Kelly stated that it was premature to assess if the shooting was random or targeted.
The factory, which opened in June, is located near the State Road 28 and Interstate 65 intersection. It designs and manufactures vehicle seating and operates manufacturing facilities that serve the Subaru plant in Lafayette.
According to the Indiana Economic Development Corporation, the new facility will be twice the size of the existing 152,000-square-foot facility on State Road 28 in Frankfort.
