What do Arbery’s family members have to say?
Mr Arbery’s family has expressed mistrust in local law enforcement, alleging that officers attempted to “cover up” his murder.
“I hope that in the aftermath of Ahmaud’s death, people who look like Ahmaud would be able to jog freely and without fear of being pursued by gunmen and killed,” his mother, Wanda Cooper Jones, told the BBC’s Aleem Maqbool.
Mr Arbery should receive the same punishment as if the case were reversed and two black men attacked an unarmed white guy, according to Benjamin Crump, the family’s lawyer.
What is the Georgia law?
Under the citizen’s arrest statute, an individual may detain someone they witness committing a major offense or fleeing.
The state statute, which dates all the way back to the American Civil War, was abolished following the occurrence.
Georgia was also one of just four states without a hate crime statute at the time. Since then, hate crime legislation has been enacted.
A federal grand jury has charged the McMichaels with hate crimes and attempted kidnapping of Mr Arbery in a separate trial scheduled to begin next year. They have entered a not guilty plea.
