Tulsi Gabbard Accuses Lori Lightfoot of ‘Anti-White Racism’ and Demands Her Resignation.
Tulsi Gabbard, a former United States Representative, accused Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot of “anti-white racism” and demanded her resignation in a Friday Twitter post.
Lightfoot sparked outrage after she sent a letter to Chicago’s local media on Wednesday stating that she would only conduct interviews with journalists of color. She was celebrating her second year as the city’s first African-American and openly lesbian mayor.
While the majority of the backlash came from right-wing critics, Gabbard—a Hawaii Democrat who unsuccessfully sought her party’s presidential nomination in 2020—slammed the mayor’s decision.
“Mayor Lightfoot’s open anti-white racism is reprehensible. President Biden, Kamala Harris, and other county [sic] leaders of all races are invited to join me in calling for Mayor Lightfoot’s resignation. Our leaders must denounce all forms of racism, including anti-white racism “Gabbard took to Twitter. Gabbard quickly became a trending topic on the social media platform as a result of the post.
Lightfoot, who is also a Democrat, argued in her letter that the Chicago media is overwhelmingly led and managed by white people. As a woman of color and a member of the LGBTQ community, the mayor expressed hope that news organizations would become more reflective of the diverse city they cover.
“I’ve been struck by the overwhelming whiteness and maleness of Chicago media outlets, editorial boards, the political press corps, and yes, the City Hall press corps specifically, since my first day on the campaign trail in 2018,” Lightfoot wrote.
The mayor urged newsrooms throughout the city to hire more reporters of color, emphasizing the importance of women of color. Lightfoot noted that she conducts interviews with Black and Latinx media organizations on a regular basis, in addition to taking other steps to promote diversity in the media industry.
“As a person of color, I have fought for diversity and inclusion in every institution that I have been a part of throughout my adult life, and being Mayor positions me uniquely to shine a spotlight on this critical issue,” the mayor wrote.
Others chastised the mayor’s choice. Tucker Carlson of Fox News slammed Lightfoot and compared her to a “Nazi.”
“To Lori Lightfoot, the fact that they are White is irrelevant because all White people are the same. They are completely defined by their skin tone. You can see how this simplifies Lori Lightfoot’s life. She can tell who to despise simply by looking at them “Carlson, who frequently sparks controversy and has been accused of racism, wrote in a Fox News opinion piece.
“Lori Lightfoot would have no difficulty pulling the right people out of line for punishment if the Chicago police ever rounded up the entire city’s population. By the way, in case you’re wondering, that was a reference to the Nazis. It was entirely justified. Lori Lightfoot is a monstrous woman “According to the right-wing pundit.
In an interview with WBEZ Chicago, Maudlyne Ihejirika, a reporter and columnist for the Chicago Sun-Times and president of the local chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists, defended Lightfoot.
“What’s the big deal if the mayor of the third-largest city wants to stand up at this point in history and say, ‘Here’s my effort, here’s my reparative measure to address the media sector?’ I say congratulations “As Ihejirika put it.
Gabbard addressed the country’s heightened racial tensions in a late-April social media post.
“Please, my dear friends and fellow Americans, let us put an end to the RACIALIZATION of everyone and everything—in other words, racialism. We are all God’s children and thus family in the truest sense, regardless of our race or ethnic origin. This is the spirit of aloha. This is precisely what our country and the world require “In an April 25 Facebook post, the former congresswoman stated.
