In a mass shooting at a grocery store in Buffalo, 10 people were killed because of their race.
Ten people were killed in a mass shooting at a grocery store in Buffalo on Saturday afternoon. Law enforcement officials said it was a hate crime based on race.
Joseph Gramaglia, the head of the Buffalo Police Department, told reporters that a heavily armed 18-year-old White man went into the store in a mostly Black neighborhood and shot 13 people, including a security guard. He later turned himself in to the police, and he is still being held.
Stephen Belongia, who is in charge of the FBI field office, said that the shooting was being looked into as a hate crime and a case of violent extremism based on race. 11 of the 13 people who were shot, Gramaglia said, were Black.
Gramaglia said that the suspect, who was heavily armed and wearing tactical gear, used a camera to live-stream the attack and shot several people in the parking lot before going into the store.
Gramaglia said that the longtime security guard at the grocery store, who was a “hero in our eyes,” tried to stop the shooter but was killed in the process. Police said that four of the people who died were store employees and six were customers.
The mayor of Buffalo, Byron Brown, said that the shooter, who has not yet been named, was not from the city. Brown said that it was “a very sad day for our community.”
Rep. Brian Higgins (D-NY) said that the event was “a terrible tragedy for the city.” He said that the shooting was part of a bigger problem across the country: “When the wrong people have assault rifles, things like this happen.”
Kathy Hochul, the Democratic governor of New York, wrote that she was “closely watching the shooting.”
We have offered help to local leaders,” she wrote on Twitter. “If you are in Buffalo, please stay away from the area and do what police and city officials tell you to do.”
The Tops Friendly Markets store in Buffalo is popular and serves a lot of people who live in the area. It is in a low-income neighborhood. It’s close to both Canisius College and Buffalo State College, as well as a number of churches and other places of interest.
The grocery store is about 10 minutes from Buffalo’s Canalside, a popular place for both locals and tourists.
Will G., who worked in the frozen dairy section, told the Buffalo News that he had just put milk in the cooler a few minutes before the shooting. As shots went off, he ended up hiding in the cooler with other people.
“I’ve just heard gunfire. “Shoot, shoot, shoot,” he told the News. “Everything sounded like it was falling down.”
He added, “I hid. I just hid. “I wasn’t leaving that room.”
The shooting at a grocery store in Buffalo on Saturday was similar to a mass shooting at a King Soopers in Boulder, Colorado, in March 2021, in which 10 people, including a police officer, were killed.
